Several new features have been introduced with version 1.4. Some like Deuce Counter and Total Points/Match Time Tracker are just kind of fun.
Others like Force Tiebreak allow you to force a 7 or 10 point tiebreak like what might you do when playing doubles and the match is done but you have 10 minutes of court time left.
Finally, Coach Mode’ is a tool which allows someone who is watching the match and holding a watch paired iPhone the ability to put notes in the automatically generated match log as well as select point types so that the player doesn’t have to do that task.
DOUBLES COUNT
Doubles count keep track of how many times the score has gotten to deuce within any game. It does this with a superscript on the score. The first time there is a deuce game, you see the normal 40:40 display. However, the display progresses along as follows during each subsequence deuce score in the game:
TOTAL POINTS AND MINUTES
The version 1.2 match finish display only displayed the score and total games. For this version, total points and total match elapsed time is now being displayed as well.
FORCE TIEBREAK
Sometimes when playing doubles, just playing the match at hand is not enough. An indoor doubles match might end with some paid for time left over so you all decide to play a tiebreaker. The old version could not do that but this version does allow that.
To force a tiebreak, bring up the watch app menu and select the Force Tiebreak button. The app will then ask you how many points for the tiebreak and who is serving first.
After you pick point totals and server, the watch will display the score as being one set each and six games per side. Double tap the TIE BRK literal to start the tiebreaker.
MATCH LOG IMPROVEMENTS
The match log that was generated by version 1.2 only included match status and incremental score. The new match log now includes the match time of when the point was entered.
COACH MODE
Coach mode is a new feature which allows a third person not involved in the match but with access to the watch’s paired iPhone to make match notes as the match progresses. There are a couple toggles on the setting screen which work together causing match logging to be changed.
For any of this to matter at all, first of all, ‘Match Log’ needs to be turned on.
Next, turn on ‘Coach Mode’. Coach mode, first of all, allows the person holding the iphone to update the game log as the match is progress. For example, if the game log looks like this on the left, tapping the screen shows the ‘Dismiss Keyboard’ button and lets you type where ever you want to in the text. Here, the user chose to add a two line comment after the last point shown though the comment could have been added anywhere.
Tapping the ‘Dismiss Keyboard’ button returns the screen to it’s regular mode and when a new point description is received it will be displayed as per it is normally, as shown below:
A second feature of ‘Coach Mode’ is to redirect point type selection from the watch to the phone, leaving the player free to just play and not make judgments about a point. The shortcoming with this is that the phone and watch need to be paired and not just be two random devices but it would allow a person on the side to make point type selections as well add notes.
When not in ‘Coach Mode’ setting the ‘Get Shot Type’ switch on will prompt the watch to ask the wearer to select a point type from the point type table so it can be recorded in the match log and reviewed later.
When the watch wearer records a point either with a WIN or LOSE entry, the phone will prompt for a point type.
Between the ability to make match notes as well as pick point types, you should be able to pretty good match notes.
